Breast Cancer
The epidemiology of breast cancer is rising with 1 in 8 female suffering from breast cancer. These females usually present with breast lumps, skin changes over breast, nipple discharge, nipple retraction and some times in late stages with bone pain, jaundice etc. A female suffering from any breast related problem is thoroughly examined and extensively evaluated to treat the disease as early as possible.
Whom should you suspect?
Any female in relatively elderly age group complaining of
- Breast Lump
- Change in nipple/skin structure
- Nipple discharge
- Family history of cancer
- History of ovarian cancer
What are the basic investigations to confirm the disease?
Triple test is mandatory for all such female
- Clinical examination of both breast and axilla by a breast specialist
- Fine needle aspiration cytology
- Mammogram/USG depending on age and breast consistency.
Should all female get their breast examined?
All females of age more than 45 years should get breast checkup by there specialist at least once in a year. All females after 2nd decade should do breast self examination every month.
How to perform Breast self examination?
Stand in front of mirror and look for any change in breast contour, any dimpling, and change of nipple direction.
Then lie down and using pad of your fingers palpate your breast in a uniform way to look for any lump, hardness, nipple discharge.
Treatment of breast cancer
Breast cancer treatment involves three types of therapy
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
Surgery involves either removing the lump with axillary lymph nodes (Breast Conserving Surgery) or complete removal of breast with axillary lymph nodes (Modified Radical Mastectomy).
Sentinel node biopsy can be done to avoid extensive axillary node dissection in some case which prevents arm swelling.
The surgical procedure involves one day of hospitalization.
Reconstructive surgery can be performed simultaneously or later on.
Chemotherapy is given in form of intravenous drugs which help further killing of cancer cells. This can be done through special devices like chemoport to avoid discomfort to patient.
Radiation therapy is done by giving radiation to the operated site through specially designed machines.
Cosmetic Breast Surgery
Female breast can be enlarged by putting silicone implants or decreased by removing extra breast tissue
Surgery for Gynecomastia / male breast enlargement
This involves removing excess of breast tissue through small incisions by combination of liposuction and surgical excision.
